The content in this blog is derived from my interviews with Anthony Styczinski, Go-To-Market Manager, Planting and Seeding Equipment, and Ryan Stien, Go-To-Market Manager, Digital Products, both of John Deere.
Anthony and Ryan from John Deere spoke about their latest technological advancements and how they can benefit farmers.
New C-Series Air Cart for Small Grains
Anthony introduced us to John Deere's new C-Series Air Cart, designed specifically for the small grain market. Available in sizes ranging from 350 to 850 bushels, these air carts come in either a leading or trailing configuration, providing versatile options for various farming operations.
Key Features:
Accurate Stainless Steel Meters: These ensure precise application rates, allowing for high-fidelity prescriptions and curve compensation.
Easy Calibration (Easy Cal): This feature eliminates the need for traditional bag calibrations. Farmers can simply load the product into Easy Cal, which runs the calibration and sends the meter displacement value directly to the cab.
Tank Scales: Now available across the entire lineup, tank scales enable active calibrations throughout the day, ensuring accurate application rates.
How It Helps Farmers:
Efficiency: The Easy Cal feature allows farmers to multitask, getting their day started quicker while the calibration runs automatically.
Precision: Real-time information on the cart side display and cab display ensures farmers always know how much product they have left and can adjust rates as needed.
Maximizing Precision Agriculture Technology
Ryan shared insights on how farmers can maximize the use of precision agriculture technology, particularly through John Deere's foundational hardware and the John Deere Operations Center.
Foundational Hardware:
Displays, GPS Receivers, and JD Link Modems: These components have been in place for some time and are essential for data collection and transmission.
John Deere Operations Center:
Data Platform: This free platform allows farmers to view and engage with their data, regardless of whether they use John Deere or non-John Deere equipment.
Insights: Farmers can track equipment performance, planting rates, fertilizer application, chemical usage, and yield data. Leveraging this data provides significant ROI through informed decision-making.
Recommendations for Farmers:
Trial Testing: Farmers can use the Operations Center to test different decisions, such as side dressing a portion of a field, and analyze the results during harvest to make informed choices for future seasons.
Cost Management: Understanding the costs and benefits of various practices helps farmers make economically sound decisions, especially in challenging financial times.
